Christopher columbus was an explorer who sailed from Europe to America in 1942. He crossed the Atlantic ocean, not knowing where he would land, it was a voyage into the unknown, after columbus found America other Europeans began to settle and explore America.
Christopher was born in 1451 in Genoa Italy during the time of the Renaissance. People were building ships and making maps of new places that Europe had never seen before.
Columbus led three of his ships named the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa maria out of the spanish port Palos in spain on August 3 1492.
His main mission was to sail west until he reached Asia,Where gold pearls and spice awaited. He first sailed for the Canary islands where the lack of wind put his expedition way behind.
Once under way Columbus had two logs, one of witch he showed to his crew and one he had secret hidden away from his crew.He did this because people back then believed that the Earth was flat and if you went to far you would fall off the Earth. So to keep his crew from worrying he made a fake log that showed the lesser part of the travel, and a real log that showed the true distance of the voyage.
His flag ship the Santa maria was crewed by 52 men, while the Nina and the Pinta were crewed by 18 men each. The Santa maria was not able to go anywhere near land, but was able to carry a huge amount of cargo and it was able to stand up well against bad weather. The Nina and the Pinta had a shallower draft then the Santa maria did not have much cargo space but were able to explore shallow bays and mouths of rivers.
